Shadow of Night review

Deborah Harkness exploded onto the literary scene with her debut novel, A Discovery of Witches, Book One of the magical All Souls Trilogy and an international publishing phenomenon. The novel introduced Diana Bishop, Oxford scholar and reluctant witch, and the handsome geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont; together they found themselves at the center of a supernatural battle over an enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana and Matthew into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens.

 My thoughts:

To say that I loved this would be an understatement. I devoured it. I read A Discovery of Witches and immediately feel in love with the characters. Shadow of Night just deepened that love. It's so beautifully written, I was transported right along with Diana into the past. You almost forget that it's not really happening.

Matthew becomes a different sort of vampire than Diana is used to. Diana becomes a person she doesn't know as well. Watching her explore who she really is, and learning to harness it is like doing it right along with her. They were sent to the past to keep them safe, but is the past any safer? They are thrown into a world of secrets and intrigue. Who can really be trusted? The jumping between past and present normally bothers me in other books, but for some reason with this one it seemed natural. I liked seeing the family in the present time looking for them in the past. I highly recommend this book!! 5 stars

Living Sensitive Book Bash

In the small town of Willow Eve, Arkansas, feisty bartender, Delia Rhodes, lives a pretty normal life; if you consider having a ghost for a roommate, pixies as best friends and being one of the rarest hybrids to exist, normal. Her life is turned upside down when someone or something begins kidnapping pixies and she is forced to find out who is behind it and why. If that wasn’t enough for her to deal with, Delia meets a delicious vampire hybrid with a very important event coming up; his registration. Will he survive? Will Delia solve the kidnappings or get dragged into the middle of something much deeper?

A little of this and that

Hello? So I'm still alive, just working a ton on all things book. Whether it's my own, or other people's, I'm working my booty off. The anthology I was supposed to be in next month sort of fell apart. I'm bummed, but it's going to be ok because I now have an awesome short story to release!! I'm hoping to put it out in December. It is a prequel to my Blood Ties series, book one in that one will be out in January some time or Early February. Leave me a comment if you want to see the cover of Blood Lust :)

Revamp

Revamp FOR THREE DAYS, IT WAS DARK. News reporters scrambled. This was the biggest story to come along in weeks. They called it a blackout. The last one was in New York City in 2003, but this one was different, special, because the grids in six major cities across the country had been fried, kaput, see-you-next-Sunday. Everyone with some jurisdiction blamed each other, and when there was no one left to blame, terrorism rode in on its gallant steed. It was the media’s fault. They were so busy stuffing fanatical Muslims with a penchant for Allah and decapitations down the American citizen’s throat, that they never saw it coming. I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on them. They were partially right. It was terror after all, but a whole new kind. And when the lights came back on, things had changed. The dark had brought us visitors.
